Preliminary election results from April 16, 2024 indicate that Commissioner Mai Xiong will be taking office as a State Representative for District 13. This will be official, and a vacancy created, once the election is certified by the State Canvassing Board and Commissioner Xiong’s letter of resignation is accepted by the BOC.
The Macomb County Charter provides:
“A vacancy shall be filled by appointment of a registered and qualified elector of the district in which he or she is to be appointed within 30 days by a Majority of Commissioners. The appointee shall take office upon filling the oath of office with the County Clerk after the meeting at which the appointment is made.”
The BOC is now accepting applications for this seat. The requirements are as follows: applicant must by: 1) at least 18 years of age, 2) a U.S. citizen and 3) a qualified and registered elector of the Macomb County Board of Commissioners District 11. Districts can be verified on the BOC website.
Applications can be found at boc.macombgov.org and are due to the BOC office by May 1st by 5 p.m. No late applications will be accepted. Public interviews will take place at the BOC’s Government Oversight Committee meeting, which is scheduled for 3 p.m. on May 8, 2024 in the BOC Boardroom on the 9th floor of the County Administration Building at 1 South Main Street in downtown Mount Clemens.
The vote for appointment is scheduled to be held at the May 16, 2024 Full Board meeting.
