About Don

Commissioner Don VanSyckel was elected to his third term on the Macomb County Board of Commissioners in November of 2024. VanSyckel represents District 5, which is half of Sterling Heights. He has lived in Sterling Heights for 40 years.

As a member of the Board, VanSyckel is interested in helping attract stable employers to the county and also retaining current employers. He also believes in a level playing field for all in all things, providing honest representation for those he was elected to serve.

VanSyckel is a delegate to the Southeast Council of Governments (SEMCOG) and its Regional Review Subcommittee, a delegate to the Area Agency on Aging (Ageways, previously AAA-1B), and a member of the Macomb County Aerospace & Defense Committee. SEMCOG addresses regional government issues, Ageways focuses on senior citizen services, and the A & D Committee works to attract high-tech employers to the county.

VanSyckel is a retired electrical engineer from a defense contractor. His interests include technology, bicycling, mystery movies, and supporting local events and attractions.

VanSyckel, 74, is happily married to Barbara and has two adult sons.
