Macomb County Board of Commissioners Adopts Resolution Authorizing Intervention in DTE Electric Company Rate Increases

The Macomb County Board of Commissioners has adopted a resolution authorizing Macomb County to intervene in proceedings before the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) regarding DTE Electric Company’s proposed electric rate increase.

The resolution authorizes the County to participate in MPSC Case No. U-22046, which stems from DTE Electric Company’s April 28, 2026 application seeking approval for electric service rate increases that would affect residents, businesses, and public institutions throughout Macomb County.

“The Board’s action demonstrates our commitment to protecting the interests of Macomb County taxpayers by ensuring their concerns are heard and represented throughout the state’s review of the proposed rate increase,” said Board Chair Joe Sabatini.

Under Article VII, Section 15 of the Michigan Constitution, counties are authorized to intervene in proceedings involving the services, charges, or rates of privately owned public utilities serving residents within their jurisdiction. By intervening, Macomb County will have the opportunity to review DTE’s proposal, advocate on behalf of county residents and businesses, and take actions necessary to protect the public interest, including opposing proposed rate increases.

Macomb County joins Oakland County, whose Board of Commissioners recently adopted a similar resolution authorizing intervention in the same Michigan Public Service Commission proceeding. The action reflects growing concern among local governments about the potential impact of the proposed rate increases on residents, employers, and public institutions across Southeast Michigan.

The resolution directs the County’s Corporation Counsel to oversee and manage Macomb County’s participation in the case before the Michigan Public Service Commission.
