Last week, District 1 Commissioner and Board Chair Don Brown resigned from the Macomb County Board of Commissioners. This creates a vacancy for the 2025-2028 term.
The Macomb County Charter provides:
“A vacancy shall be filled by appointment of a registered and qualified elector of the district in which he or she is to be appointed within 30 days by a Majority of Commissioners. The appointee shall take office upon filing the oath of office with the County Clerk after the meeting at which the appointment is made.
If the vacancy is filled in the first year of the term, the appointee shall serve until a successor is elected in a special election called by the Commission in accordance with law…”
The BOC is now accepting applications for this seat. The requirements are as follows: applicant must be: 1) at least 18 years of age, 2) a U.S. citizen and 3) a qualified and registered elector of the Macomb County Board of Commissioners District 1. Districts can be verified on the BOC website.
Applications can be found here and must be received by the BOC office by January 9, 2025 by 5 p.m. Applications can be delivered in person or sent via email attachment in .PDF file format to bocadmin@macombgov.org. No late applications will be accepted. Public interviews will take place at the BOC’s January Government Oversight Committee meeting, which is expected to be scheduled for 3 p.m. on January 15, 2025 in the BOC Boardroom on the 9th Floor of the County Administration Building at 1 South Main Street in downtown Mount Clemens.
The vote for appointment will be held at the January Full Board meeting, which is expected to be held on January 23, 2025.
Final meetings dates will be set at the Board’s Organizational Meeting on January 9th. The appointed candidate will serve until a special election is held and certified.
