At today’s Full Board meeting, the Macomb County Board of Commissioners (BOC) approved a contract with Plante Moran Realpoint, LLC to begin another significant investment in the county’s infrastructure and aging facilities. This is a continuation of the County’s progress in improving government services and operational efficiency for residents.
As part of the project planning process, the BOC is working in conjunction with the Executive to conduct a comprehensive countywide space needs and facilities assessment to evaluate more than 2 million square feet of county-owned assets. The assessment will identify
This first phase of the project will determine the best approach to a consolidated facility that will house most of the county’s Health and Community Services departments under one roof. By centralizing services and staff operations, the county will improve coordination between departments, enhance accessibility for residents, and operate more efficiently — ultimately saving taxpayer dollars.
The solution will replace the Verkuilen Building, Southeast Health Center, and the Health Department building, all of which face increasing maintenance and operational challenges due to aging infrastructure.
The county also secured $25 million in state funding to support the project, significantly reducing the financial burden on local taxpayers while allowing the county to move forward with a long-term investment in public infrastructure.
Through the BOC’s disciplined financial policies, lean budgeting practices, and careful stewardship of taxpayer resources, the county has built a strong fund balance and is able to finance current projects with cash rather than relying heavily on borrowing. These efforts also contributed to the County’s recent Aaa bond rating upgrade and reflect the BOC’s longstanding commitment to fiscal responsibility.
“This project represents an investment not only in our facilities, but in the future of county services,” said Board Chair Joe Sabatini. “As a result of the Board’s responsible financial management, we are able to modernize critical infrastructure while continuing to protect taxpayers.”
Additional project details and timelines will be shared as planning and development move forward.
