Joe Sabatini (R-District 4) was elected chair of the Macomb County Board of Commissioners by his peers on January 9th.
“I will work with each Commissioner on their individual goals to support their district,” said Sabatini. “I will ensure we effectively execute our legislative powers and provide sound oversight of our fiduciary responsibilities.”
The vote was unanimous and Commissioner Haugh made the nomination.
Following the election of Sabatini as Chair, Harold Haugh (D-District 10) was re-elected as Vice Chair and Sylvia Grot (R-District 3) was re-elected as Sergeant-at-Arms.
The Board’s election of Sabatini and Haugh as Chair and Vice Chair shows a continued commitment to bipartisanship and collaboration. As the legislative body of the County, the priorities of the Board remain passing a balanced budget, providing sound fiscal oversight and creating transparent policies that best serve the citizens of Macomb County.
Sabatini was first elected as a County Commissioner in November of 2010 and served through the end of 2016, representing Macomb Township, as well as portions of Clinton, Macomb and Shelby Townships, and the City of Utica. He was elected to return to the Board of Commissioners in November of 2020. He has served two consecutive terms and was re-elected again in November, serving most of Macomb Township. Since his return, Sabatini served as Chair of the Finance/Audit/Budget Committee, managing the Board’s months-long process in reviewing, amending and adopting the recommended budget.
Haugh is serving his fourth term as Commissioner and third term as Vice Chair and Chair of the Government Oversight Committee. Prior to joining the Board of Commissioners he had a long career at General Motors and served in the Michigan House of Representatives and as the Mayor of Roseville.
Grot was elected to her second term as a Commissioner in November and serves as Chair of the Macomb Orchard Trail Commission.
The Board also approved the 2025 meeting schedule and adopted the committee assignments.
