This year, the Macomb Green Schools Program presented the fourth annual Green Advocate Award to Mr. James Swank, a volunteer from Carleton Middle School. Mr. Swank’s nomination came from Joylynn Blum, a teacher at Carleton Middle School.
“I, Joylynn Blum, a teacher and Ecology Club leader at Carleton Middle School would like to nominate Mr. James Swank for his outstanding contributions to making Carleton Middle School a more green school. When the education world was unexpectedly turned upside down and students and teachers were sent home to learn remotely, Mr. Swank stepped up and continued to come to the school to help out. In that time Mr. Swank voluntarily took care of the plants growing in the greenhouses. Mr. Swank watered, spliced, repotted, added additional plants, weeded and planted to continue what had been started by the Ecology Club. In addition to helping with the greenhouses, Mr. Swank has always put together beautiful displays in the main hallway dedicated to showcasing the animals our students raise money to adopt from the WWF. Mr. Swank also often volunteers his time at our school to do additional activities such as collecting, organizing, and delivering the warm clothing items that our Student Council members gathered during the Giving Tree Clothing Drive this year for community outreach. Mr. Swank was not asked to do any of this; he simply volunteers for the benefit of our students, staff and community and I truly appreciate him for that.”
Congratulations to Mr. James Swank, 2021 Green Advocate Award Winner!
